“I was referred to Hospice by one of the Oncology nurses who suggested it might be helpful for me after (another) diagnosis of cancer.

While I felt relatively fit and well and have had no problems with side effects of chemotherapy, I was more than happy to accept the referral – I’ve never had a fear of the Hospice or thought of it as a place only for people who are very ill.

My experience over the past few months has been so positive.  I’ve been lucky enough to have had the support of four different teams:

  • The nurses have both visited me at home, met me in Hospice and checked in by phone. Having them visit me at home gives me the time to discuss my treatments in a relaxed environment without feeling pressured by time.
  • I’ve had the most amazing massages from the Therapy team and can only apologise to them that I become so relaxed I fall asleep and snore!
  • The social worker visited me at home and explained everything that is available to me.
  • I have also attended the FAB course, taking the opportunity to chat to other people who are also struggling with their breathing and getting tips and hints from the nurses on how to keep active.

In addition to all this, I’ve discovered Elaine’s café and use that as a base to meet members of my family before or after hospital appointments for a bowl of delicious soup and some of their amazing chips!

I’m aware there are many other services available which I haven’t made use of, and all of that without any mention of end-of-life care.

I really can’t put into words how glad I am that I agreed to be referred to Hospice and my appreciation of the support I’ve received.  Hopefully my treatment will continue for a long time, and I will be able to receive their support for more years.”
